How else am I supposed to be able to be able to neatly write my 日本ese at the same time as the other stuff?
UTF-8 is an ugly hack of a superset on ASCII though. As any latin-<number here> charset inhabitant will tell you it can lead to mojibake (characters above 127 take at least 2 bytes in UTF-8, which they didn't use too)
although UTF-16 can encode stuff above 65536 much in the same way UTF-8 does stuff bigger than 127.
UTF-16 is a variable length encoding, a character may either be encoded in 16 bit or 2*16 bit.
What you want is UCS-2, which is not variable length.
