Perhaps free/libre/open/whatever you want to call it software is strong enough now that it doesn't need a single organization or a mascot. I don't care if the FSF is incompetent, GNU has poor code quality, and GPLv3 is a jumbled mess; I can use other licenses, other software, and distribute my code other ways (including hosting my own). I don't need rms to encourage me to use free software by singing a folk song; I use and write free software for my own reasons.
I respect rms for his work and his dedication to his ideals, which I recognize are tied inextricably to the parts of his personality that irritate me. I think he's going to be forced to watch his legacy systematically dismantled, and to die in exile for the crime of being quirky in a way that is no longer cool. But I think he ultimately won, even if he won't see it that way.
